Earl is a recently unearthed historic heirloom variety kindly sent to Tomato Revolution by friend Craig LeHoullier author of the popular EPIC TOMATOES book.
Emily Chitwood sent the seed to Craig. Earl Sartain from Danielsville was serving in the military in Germany in the second world war. When he came back to the states he brought with him seeds from a tomato he had collected during his time stationed in Germany. His family continued to grow this tomato year after year and pass it from one generation to the next. Emily's best friend's mother was visiting Earl's elderly sister and brother in law a few years back and remarked on the large tomatoes sitting on their dining room table. They told her the story of Earl bringing back the tomato seeds from Germany and sent a tomato or two with her. She saved the seeds and started growing them herself.
The flavour is well balanced and delicious. A classic beefsteak tomato.
